DENAFRIPS DAC is equipped with Intel Cyclone® IV E FPGA, Field Programmable Gate Array. The software running in the FPGA is called firmware; a specified, purposed-built operating instructions the DENAFRIPS DAC uses. It is the heart of the DAC where complex Digital Signal Processing is happening in the FPGA.

One of the beauties of the FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), as the name suggested, it is Field Programmable.

DENAFRIPS DAC's FPGA firmware can be updated by using a Windows OS or MacOS computer over the USB port by a person with good computer knowledge. Most customers will be able to do it because it's fairly straightforward.

12th ANNV. FPGA FIRMWARE

To commemorate DENAFRIPS’s 12 years of digital audio excellence, DENAFRIPS engineers have been working on a new 12th Annv. FPGA Firmware to improve the sound quality, add features, bugs fixed, update software and keep your device up-to-date.

Areas of Improvement:

  • Improved Adaptive FIFO Buffer & Reclocking Architecture

  • Reduced the effect of Buffer overrun/underrun due to the Source's Clock and the DAC's Clock differences

  • Reduced Audio Latency

  • Eliminate Phase Difference between L/R Channels

  • Optimised DSP to improve the sonic performance

Please go through the following guide and requirements for the FPGA firmware update. Should you need further assistance, please contact us.

DENAFRIPS FPGA Firmware Request
  1. Once we receive the above information, we will provide the specified* FPGA Firmware Update Tool (FUT) for you

  2. The firmware can be flashed via a Windows or MacOS Computer

FIRMWARE UPDATE GUIDE

WARNING

  1. Please use the specified* Firmware Update Tool (FUT) provided by us - DENAFRIPS/VINSHINE AUDIO

  2. The FPGA FUT is designed specifically for the DAC/FPGA model. It is not interchangable. DO NOT use the FUT for other devices.

  3. FPGA Firmware Update may take up to 3-5 minutes

  4. Please wait for the FPGA update to complete. Please do not power off the DAC and/or unplug the USB cable while the firmware is being updated

  5. Failure to adhere to the above may brick the DAC

FPGA FIRMWARE UPDATED

  1. Once the firmware is updated successfully (as detailed in the Guide above), Power off the DAC completely by turning off the power supply and/or unplug the power cord

  2. Wait for 15 seconds, power on the DAC. Select USB, USB LED illuminate. The DENAFRIPS USB DAC should be detected by the computer

  3. Share with us the following screenshot (Windows / MacOS) to confirm the firmware is updated successfully via email (link here)

FPGA Firmware Update Tool

You would need the following items in order to proceed:

  1. A Windows or MacOS Computer/Laptop with USB port

  2. Standard USB2.0 Cable

  3. Internet Connection (To download the driver and firmware packages)

  4. DENAFRIPS DAC

IDENTIFY THE FPGA MODEL CODE

Identify the model of the FPGA chip used in the DAC

  1. Each FPGA chip used in the DAC(s) is different

  2. You will need to identify the FPGA model code used in DAC

  3. To do this, it's required to open the top cover/chassis of the DAC

NOTE:

We have information about the specific FPGA chip model employed in the following DAC:

  • Enyo

  • Ares 12th/12th-1

  • Pontus II 12th

  • Venus/II/12th

  • Terminator II/Plus/12th

If you possess any of these DACs, it is unnecessary to provide us with a photo of the FPGA chip.

In fact, If you happen to acquire the DAC from Vinshine Audio and are able to provide us with the order number, we can easily determine the exact FPGA model utilized in the DAC. This streamlined approach significantly minimizes the effort required to identify the FPGA chip employed in the DAC..

4. Share with us a clear, high-res photo of the FPGA chip detailed the FPGA code (as shown in the above photo) via the following form.

FAQ: What is Order Number?

If you have purchased the DAC from Vinshine Audio or our Authorised Partners (thank you!), you should have received an Order Number. If you have lost the Order Number for any reason, please do not be worried, you may enter 'Vinshine Audio' instead.

FAQ: What is Order Date?

By letting us know the Order Date / Ship Date, we may trace the FPGA chip used in the DAC. As such, you do not need to share the photo of the FPGA chip with us. Nonetheless, if it's not too much of a trouble, we highly recommend you to share with us a high-res photo of the FPGA chip. We can't be too careful, can we?

FAQ: I bought the DAC used and/or from the grey market. Will I be entitled for the Firmware Update?

We understand some of you may have purchased the DAC used and/or from the grey market (sadly). Vinshine Audio is willing to extend our goodwill support to you in good faith. We are good people afterall. Please enter 'Used' or 'Grey' in the Order Number.
